From Digital-follow-up to Digital-Leadoff

Abstract

 

We have passed the period of Digital-Follow-up, and now we are in Digital Twin, and trying to enter Digital-lead-off of Industrial Internet of Things. I will share lessons learned from our recent implementations of AIOT systems in oil refinery and glass factories in Middle East, United States, and China.

 

Biography

 

Yunhao Liu, ACM Fellow , IEEE Fellow, Professor at Tsinghua University. He also served as the Dean of School of Software in Tsinghua, and the MSU Foundation Professor and the Chairperson of Department of Computer Science and Engineering in Michigan State University. Yunhao received his B.S. degree in the Department of Automation at Tsinghua University, and an M.A. degree at Beijing Foreign Studies University, China. He received an M.S. and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University, USA. Yunhao received Hong Kong ICT Best Innovation and Research Award Grand Prize 2007, China Ministry of Education First Class Natural Science Award 2010, Second Class National Natural Science Award 2011, ACM Presidential Award 2013, CCF Wang Xuan Award 2022, China Ministry of Education First Class Technological Invention Award 2022as well as many best paper awards including ACM MobiCom 2014 best paper award, ACM SenSys 2021 Best Paper Award, and SIGCOMM 2021 Best Student Paper Award.

XAForward: Accelerating Distributed Machine Learning Through Fast eXpress Data Path

Abstract

 

With the rapid development of Artificial Intelligence Generated Content (AIGC), traditional distributed machine learning within a single data center is increasingly inadequate to meet the growing demands for raw data and computational resources. To address this challenge, training across heterogeneous data centers has become a necessary option. However, differences in communication protocols and network structures in heterogeneous environments hinder traditional routing devices from effectively recognizing and processing data. Furthermore, excessive parsing of gradient data packets by intermediate routing devices significantly increases transmission delays. To tackle these challenges, we designed XAForward, aimed at enabling efficient computation and communication in heterogeneous data centers to achieve rapid model training convergence. Specifically, XAForward introduces a polymorphic-compatible protocol that reconstructs the headers of gradient data packets for data forwarding across different communication protocols in heterogeneous data centers. Additionally, to facilitate fast data forwarding and minimize data copying, we employ kernel bypass techniques based on eXpress Data Path (XDP) for packet processing and kernel-level data forwarding using index identifiers. Experimental results indicate that XAForward reduces communication duration by 35%-40% compared to traditional distributed machine learning forwarding architectures.

His research areas include Internet, cloud computing and cyberspace security, etc. He has received 2 second prizes for national scientific and technological progress, 1 second prize of national teaching achievement and 8 first prizes at the provincial and ministerial levels.

Accurate and High-performance Simulation for Large-scale LLM Training

Abstract

 

Large-scale LLM training usually takes long time, so it is very important to optimize the settings of the LLM training infrastructure, which includes network topology, transport protocol, collective communication, parallelism strategy, etc. However, the design space of LLM training infrastructure is so large that, it is quite difficult to find the optimal setting before training an LLM model. Simulation is a low-cost way to validate the effectiveness of a specific setting for LLM training infrastructure. In this talk, we will present how to simulate large-scale LLM training with both high accuracy and high performance.

His research interest includes data center network, AI computing network and trustworthy Internet architecture. He has published more than 100 technical papers in referred conferences and journals, including ACM SIGCOMM, USENIX NSDI, USENIX Security, ACM CCS, ISOC NDSS, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, etc. He served as an associate editor for IEEE Transactions on Computers, IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transactions on Cloud Computing, a general co-chair for IEEE LANMAN 2015 and APNet 2018, a TPC co-chair for IEEE LANMAN 2014 and APNet 2025, as well as a TPC member for ACM SIGCOMM, IEEE ICNP, IEEE INFOCOM, etc. He is a fellow of IEEE.

Research and Exploration of Key Technologies for Integrating Supercomputing and Intelligent Computing

Abstract

 

Supercomputing and artificial intelligence are significantly accelerating the process of scientific and technological innovation. Complex supercomputing applications are facing computational explosion and convergence problems, where intelligent computing methods such as deep learning are effective solutions. Large-scale intelligent computing applications such as smart cities require supercomputing to provide high-precision solutions. Integrated computing of supercomputing and intelligent computing has become an important trend. However, it still faces major challenges in terms of integrated computing models, highly scalable system architecture, and efficient parallel algorithms. This report will discuss the parallel processing architecture of the integration of supercomputing and intelligent computing, the computing service platform, and its practical applications.

 

Biography

 

Kenli Li is currently a Cheung Kong Professor of computer science and technology with Hunan University (HNU), the Vice-President of the HNU, and the Director in the National Supercomputing Center in Changsha. His research interests include parallel and distributed processing, high performance computing, and Big Data management. He has published over 350 research papers in international conferences/journals. He is a Fellow of the CCF. He is currently serving or has served as an Associate Editor for IEEE TC, IEEE TII, and IEEE TSC.
